Civil and Construction / Forestry and Trunking Roads
Construction sites of all sizes and types pose a unique set of dust control challenges. Airborne dust can affect the health of workers as well as cause visibility issues for neighboring communities. Governing bodies such as Local Councils and the EPA naturally become concerned if such issues arise.
There can be numerous dust generation points in a single construction site, including unsealed haul roads, bare earth pushed around by dozers and graders and stockpiles of fine materials such as soil
On large scale construction sites, it’s especially important for every individual dust generation point to be dealt with separately with targeted solutions. Without effective strategies in place, dust can quickly become widespread and unmanageable.
For these reasons, Dust-A-Side specializes in holistic, site-wide dust solutions for civil and construction projects. We are the only Canadian company that provides complete and integrated dust control services as well as haul road management and erosion control solutions. These services combined have been proven to increase productivity and safety, unlock cost efficiencies and benefit the environment.

Our tailored dust control measures can be used from pit to port. From stockpiles to loading areas to exposed earth, we have all your dust problems covered.
Haul Road Management
We provide a full-service turnkey solution incorporating the manufacture, supply, installation, maintenance and management of haul road performance and associated dust control products.
Dust-A-Side offers much more than just dust control measures. The binder content of our specially formulated erosion control products help to cost-effectively reduce wind erosion, while the addition of a sealing agent will also reduce water erosion.
Why water alone won’t cut it
The traditional solution for dust control, especially at construction sites, is to use water carts to spray haul roads or materials with water in order to prevent dust becoming airborne. However, as many site managers will know first-hand, water carts are not only expensive to use but they cause more problems in the long run.
Purchasing water is expensive when compared to the short-term effectiveness the water carts actually achieve. Areas treated with water carts will only remain wet for so long before they need to be sprayed again. Operating and labor costs are therefore increased whilst productivity decreases.
Water carts also create problems with run-off and mud which in turn creates safety issues for workers and vehicles. The issue of mud can be amplified if there are 3rd party trucks driving on and off the construction site. Local Councils will often impose penalties when large amounts of mud are tracked onto public roads from the tire of these trucks.
The overall effectiveness of using water in preventing airborne dust particles is low compared to other alternatives. Water has a very high surface tension, making it difficult for individual water droplets to actually bind with dust particles. This leaves dust particles much more prone to becoming airborne.
As industry leaders in the field of dust control, Dust-A-Side has championed the development of highly innovative solutions and products which do not rely solely on water. Rather, our patented polymer-based additives and holistic services are designed to help mines achieve significant water savings. With water scarcity becoming such a worldwide concern, our services are leading the way in helping mines achieve better sustainability outcomes.
About our additives
Dust-A-Side’s specially formulated polymer-based additives can be used to improve the performance of water carts for civil and construction projects.
These additives are designed to create a protective seal or “crust” over the exposed surface or stockpile. This crust effectively prevents dust from becoming airborne when the sprayed area is exposed to wind, rain and even truck tires. The use of these additives also reduces high operating costs associated with water carts.
There are two additives from our range which are particularly well suited to civil and construction site applications:
HydroTac – ideal for short term applications
HydroTac is a biodegradable binder used to bind surface particles together. A hygroscopic crusting agent, this dust control product is highly effective in containing fugitive dust. Treated areas are immediately trafficable after application, making it the product of choice for construction sites both large and small.
AquaTarp – ideal for long term applications
AquaTarp is a solvent-free, water and surfactant based emulsion of latex polymer. The presence of acrylic matter in the AquaTarp formulation helps to bind fine dust particles that can quickly become airborne at the slightest breeze.
Benefits of Dust-A-Side’s polymer-based additives
Both AquaTarp and HydroTac deliver substantial benefits in terms of dust control and cost savings, including:
• Operational dust reductions of over 70%
• Water savings of over 50%
• Operational cost savings and efficiencies due to a reduction in water cart operating hours of more than 50%
• Reduced sediment run-off and surface erosion
• Safer operations due to improved visibility and reduced likelihood of a vehicle losing control as a result of overwatering
While both highly effective, the specific conditions of a construction site always need to be considered in order to determine which solution, or combination of solutions, will be most suitable.
